The LA Galaxy suffered a huge loss with the news that Sebastian Lletget will be out of action for four to sixth months. A lot was expected from the 24-year-old heading into the 2017 MLS season, but Los Angeles will have to rely on their depth.
Head coach Curt Onalfo has a plethora of options on the wing and seems to have zeroed in on Lletget’s replacement as he told Adam Serrano of the LA Galaxy:
“For us, [Sebastian] played a lot of minutes wide. That would mean there were games that I didn’t start Ema which was a difficult decision because he’s been very good,” Onalfo told LA Galaxy Insider. “I think with Ema, he makes us dangerous and he creates chances. We have all the players to step up.”
Ema Boateng was the logical choice given his excellent start to the new season. The speedy winger notched the game-winning goal against Real Salt Lake before the international break. In addition, Boateng has made an instant impact once he was inserted into the match through the first three games.
The head coach feels confident that the Galaxy will overcome Lletget’s injury as he is no stranger to mixing and matching new lineups:
“I spent the last three years that I never had the same team twice so if there is any indication, that were two days to handle it, you either feel sorry for yourself and sulk or you make solutions,” said Onalfo. “That’s what we’re going to do.”
Aside from Boateng, the Galaxy has Ari Lassiter and Jose Villarreal as alternative wing options. Giovani dos Santos and Gyasi Zardes can also play on the side if needed or Onalfo can call-up some of the Galaxy II players to provide a spark.
Los Angeles does not have time to dwell on Lletget’s injury. Their season is off to a shaky start with two losses, multiple injuries and suspensions to deal with. They travel to face the Vancouver Whitecaps with most of their roster available.
